What is the purpose of alkalis (lyes) in cleaning products?
Ammonia, soda, sodium and potassium hydroxide are the most important basic constituents of stain releasing lyes that remove particularly stubborn fat-based deposits (e.g. in the oven) and clear blockages (e.g. in waste pipes). However alkalis cannot remove lime. Cleaners based on strong lyes are corrosive. It is therefore important that the hazard warning labels and safety advice are closely observed.
